OXFORD — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has announced plans to expand the current discount store on Route 20 in Oxford by approximately 30,000 square feet. The expansion will allow the inclusion of general merchandise and a full service grocery store under one roof. “We are pleased to be able to offer the residents of Oxford and surrounding communities an improved shopping destination for their day to day needs,” said Chris Buchanan, senior manager of public affairs and government relations for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. The store’s grocery section will feature a delicatessen, bakery, dry and frozen goods, meat and dairy departments, and fresh produce alongside over 30 departments of general merchandise. An independent study by Global Insights shows that Wal-Mart saves American families $2,500 per year regardless of where they choose to shop. In addition to saving people money, Wal-Mart is committed to giving back to the communities it serves. In 2007, Wal-Mart Stores and Sam’s Clubs contributed and raised over $11.5 million in cash and in-kind donations as a result of its presence in Massachusetts. Wal-Mart currently operates 46 stores in the state of Massachusetts and employs over 11,700 associates.
