Donation received: The Underwood School has received a $1000 check from Wal-Mart of Newport to support its Community Garden. The grant money will be used to increase the capacity of the garden and help fund equipment needed to create an ‘outdoor classroom’ at the garden site. Last spring, the students in Mrs. Brennan’s fourth grade class designed the garden and decided on what would be grown. After carefully tending to the garden over the summer, the fall harvest was bountiful and donated to Lucy’s Hearth. Last month, a representative from Lucy’s hearth shared her menu with the students and told them how she incorporated the Underwood community garden produce into each meal. It was a great service learning experience for the children of Underwood School. This donation will ensure that the garden will continue to grow and expand into an outdoor classroom.
