BENTONVILLE, ARK. - A planned expansion at the Skowhegan Wal-Mart is expected to bring up to 100 new jobs to the area by 2011. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.  announced plans last week to expand the Skowhegan store located at Fairgrounds Marketplace. The construction will add approximately 29,000 square feet, subject to permits and approvals.  Construction could begin by the fall of 2010, and is expected to be completed approximately 8-10 months later.

The new Wal-Mart would be approximately 133,383 square feet and would provide a full range of products and services, including a full grocery store, pharmacy, optical center, and general merchandise. Wal-Mart currently operates a 103,815 square foot discount store at the site which would remain open during construction.
"We are excited to have the opportunity to bring an expanded store with wider aisles and more amenities to Skowhegan residents," said Alexandra Serra, senior manager of public affairs and government relations for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
In addition to being a local discount store, Wal-Mart is committed to giving back to the communities it serves. In 2007, Wal-Mart Stores and Sam's Clubs contributed and raised over $1 million in cash and in-kind donations as a result of its presence in Maine.
"Wal-Mart has been a contributing member of the Skowhegan business community for nearly 15 years and we look forward to building upon this relationship while also providing many more shopping options and better value for consumers," continued Serra.
The expansion will provide nearly 100 new jobs for area residents. The average hourly wage for regular full time associates in Maine is $11.94 per hour.  Wal-Mart currently employs 7,800 associates in Maine.
