Rallying behind the theme,“Investing in Children and Youth: Building Our Future,” speakers at the Lights On Afterschool Breakfast of Champions celebrated after-school achievements in Rhode Island, discussing the importance of after-school programming.

The event – hosted by Rhode Island Afterschool Plus Alliance and CHILDSPAN – also featured Erin Gruwell, a teacher and author of a best-selling educational book, as its keynote speaker. The alliance was presented with a check for $25,000 from Wal-Mart and Cox Charities awarded $1,000 to after- school programming at Mt. Hope Learning Center and Apeiron Institute for Sustainable Living.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed presented the State Leadership Team, a group of top-level advisers, with the Lights On Afterschool Champion award for their work in developing the “Blueprint for Afterschool and Summer Programs.” The report is expected to support high-quality after-school and summer programs in Rhode Island and will be submitted this fall to the governor’s office, the Rhode Island General Assembly and to a national audience through the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.

The State Leadership Team includes Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline; Peter McWalters, commissioner of elementary and secondary education; Senate Majority Leader Teresa Paiva-Weed; House Majority Leader Gordon D. Fox; Sue Stenhouse, director of community relations for Gov. Donald L. Carcieri; and Elizabeth Burke Bryant, executive director for Rhode Island Kids Count.
